Marian & Andrew’s Story

The demand for good food and social connection doesn’t take a break. That’s why monthly support that The North Grove can count on makes all the difference, as we serve a community that counts on us.

Marian and Andrew have donated to The North Grove every month like clockwork for more than a decade. They love being a part of the Dartmouth community. As retired physicians, they both see immense value in The North Grove’s innovative approach to combatting food insecurity and building community.

Marian used to volunteer her time at a food bank, packing baskets of emergency food supplies for families struggling with food insecurity. When she first visited The North Grove ten years ago, she was inspired. “It’s not just food...It’s food education, cooking classes, people eating together. Everything is done with such care. It’s building resilience,” says Marian.

When they were young, Marian and Andrew both came to Canada as newcomers. Andrew recalls from his childhood that “charity organizations helped my parents get started when they arrived in a new country with almost nothing.”

Now Marian and Andrew appreciate the opportunity to give back to community members who benefit from the programs at The North Grove. They continue to give because the impact of their gift is so clear.

  • 98% of participants say The North Grove provides them with an important source of healthy food

  • 96% say they always feel accepted for who they are at The North Grove

  • 90% say since attending North Grove programs they have more people and supports in their life they can rely on in times of need.

When you become a monthly donor to The North Grove, you are not alone. You join a caring community of monthly supporters like Marian and Andrew who, together, sustain our free programs and services. A $10 monthly gift is far more powerful than you may think.

Being a monthly donor makes it easy to support The North Grove. “It means I don't have to do anything; it rolls on through the next year,” says Marian.

Monthly giving also allows you to maximize your impact, in a way that’s affordable for you. As Marian puts it—You won’t notice $10, but you would probably notice $120!

“Even a small amount monthly adds up and gives The North Grove stability and funding they can count on, so that they can keep doing what they do best—bring lasting change to so many lives.”

Your monthly gift is an on-going investment in building a thriving community. The stability that your gift provides means we can be there for people every month of the year, no matter what challenges arise.

Please consider joining Marian and Andrew and our community of monthly donors this March.

The North Grove gratefully acknowledges that we live and work in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi'kmaq people.

This territory is covered by the Treaties of Peace and Friendship which Mi’kmaq, Wolastoqiyik, and Passamaquoddy People first signed with the British Crown in 1726. We are all treaty people.

People of African descent have also shared these lands for more than 400 years.

We acknowledge the histories, contributions, and legacies of these communities and are grateful to live, work and grow food in Mi’kma’ki.
