What the cluck?! Community hub launches contest to name new chickens

Updated: May 26, 2022

May 2, 2022 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE What the cluck?! Community hub launches contest to name new chickens The North Grove is very egg-cited to announce a naming contest as they welcome three new chickens to their Community Farm.

The North Grove’s Community Farm provides an important outdoor space for community members to learn, connect and experience new opportunities, whether it’s digging in the dirt, relaxing at a picnic table or growing fresh produce together.

The chickens will be a new addition to the 20,000 sq. ft farm, which comes alive every spring with programs, workshops, and drop-in activities for adults and children.

This lush community hub is vital in a neigbourhood where 82% of residents live in apartments, with very little access to personal growing space and locally grown produce. Everything that’s harvested from the Community Farm goes directly to the tables of program participants; cooked in meals, used in workshops, and distributed at the Good Food Market and Farm Stall.

Now community members, young and old, will get to enjoy farm-fresh eggs from our new feathered friends and have hands-on learning opportunities.

"In an urban area people may not have a chance to spend time in the countryside or be on a farm. We try to give people a taste of that at The North Grove," says Community Farm Coordinator, Katherine Carey. "The chickens are a chance to learn more about nature, get comfortable around animals, and build connections with neighbours. I think it will also bring a lot of joy to The North Grove community!"

Financial support from the City of Halifax, via Councillor Tony Mancini, made it possible for The North Grove to get the hens. One hen will be named Toni, in the Councillor’s honour, leaving two chickens to be named.
