Our History

The first Speak Up! Show Up! campaign was held in 2016 during the municipal by-election in Dartmouth North.

The North Grove’s Community Action Team created weekly events, including a Voter Pop Up, All Candidates Meeting and Voting Parade that attracted widespread community interest and media attention.

Voter turnout more than tripled - from 2.7% to 7.45% - after the first Speak Up! Show Up! campaign and similar events have been held for every election, at all government levels, ever since.

Sharing the story

We’ve worked with many partners on our voter engagement model and have shared the results at numerous events including:

  • The Food Banks Canada conference and the Community Food Centres Canada national summit

  • This year we’re presenting our campaign strategies at the Canadian Vote Summit hosted by the Democratic Engagement Exchange at Ryerson University

  • We’ve partnered with  organizations such as Food Secure Canada, Feed Nova Scotia, Halifax Public Libraries and Renters Education.
