Voter turnout more than tripled in the neighbourhood during the first Speak Up! Show Up! campaign held in Dartmouth North in 2016. Now the campaign is back with a series of in person and online events focused on building voter engagement in the upcoming municipal election.
“We’ve come full circle; we started the campaign four years ago with municipal politics and the interest and impact is incredible” said Tammy Shields, Community Action Coordinator at The North Grove. “We’re very proud of the nation-wide interest in our campaign model and want to continue to build on that success.”
Speak Up! Show Up! events are planned every week (see list below) culminating in an online pre-election celebration.
Campaign impact
Speak Up! Show Up! engages hundreds of participants from the neighbourhood in pre- election activities. In addition, voter turnout in Dartmouth North more than tripled during the first campaign – from 2.7% to 7.45%.
The model has attracted provincial and national attention. Last year the campaign partnered with Feed Nova Scotia to share its campaign tools with food banks across the province. This year The North Grove is presenting its campaign strategies at the Canadian Vote Summit hosted by the Democratic Engagement Exchange at Ryerson University.
“We’re thrilled to be partnering with the Democratic Engagement Exchange at the Canadian Vote Summit and appreciate their efforts to share this information with communities all across the country” said Wendy Fraser, Executive Director, The North Grove.
